Anastassios Koumbourlis, M.D., M.P.H., is Chief of the Divisions of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine at Children's National Hospital. Apart from treating pulmonary and sleep disorders, he also evaluates and treats cystic fibrosis at our Cystic Fibrosis Center (Pediatric and Adult). Dr. Koumbourlis previously was a professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Chief of Pulmonology at the Schneider Children’s Hospital in New York. Prior to this, he was on the faculty of Columbia University and Director of the Pulmonary Function and Exercise Laboratories at the Children’s Hospital of New York at Columbia University Medical Center.
Dr. Koumbourlis has extensive experience in pediatric pulmonary medicine with special interests in congenital lung and airway anomalies, chest wall deformities and pulmonary complications of neuromuscular and sickle cell disease.
Marva Moxey-Mims, M.D., came to Children’s National Hospital from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. There she served as deputy director for clinical science in the Division of Kidney, Urologic and Hematologic Diseases, overseeing a portfolio of research including trials for kidney disease and genitourinary dysfunction in adults and children, and director of the pediatric nephrology program. In addition she managed the division’s small business grants for kidney research.
Two of the studies that Dr. Moxey-Mims initiated, and of which she is most proud, are the ongoing Chronic Kidney Disease in Children (CKiD) study and the Randomized Intervention for Children with Vesicoureteral Reflux (RIVUR) trial. CKiD is the largest study of pediatric chronic kidney disease ever conducted in North America, and it is yielding a lot of information that will lead to better understanding and treatment of chronic kidney disease in children. RIVUR was a large trial undertaken to understand the effectiveness of prophylactic antimicrobial treatment in children with vesicoureteral reflux and the primary trial results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Dr. Moxey-Mims’ focus at Children’s National will be on clinical research to improve the care of children with kidney disease, and as a tool to educate trainees. She received an undergraduate degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and a medical degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C. She completed a pediatric residency and clinical pediatric nephrology training at Children’s National, followed by a research fellowship at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the NIH. She is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology. Dr. Moxey-Mims is a member of several national committees and has more than 90 scientific publications, including peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
Yves d'Udekem, M.D., Ph.D., joined Children's National Hospital as division chief of Cardiac Surgery and co-director of the Children's National Heart Center in September 2020.
Dr. d'Udekem is Belgian-born with Canadian and Australian citizenship and received his early training in cardiac surgery in Belgium and Toronto. He worked as a cardiac surgeon in Belgium, operating on both adults and children with congenital heart disease. Dr. d'Udekem then worked with internationally-recognized heart surgeon professor Marc de Laval and others in London to train in congenital heart surgery at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children.
From there, he was recruited as a pediatric heart specialist to The Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, an institution that has been a leader in advancing the field of congenital heart disease. In Melbourne, Dr. d'Udekem built an outstanding reputation for clinical excellence and an exceptional academic career. He has over 300 publications and is highly cited and respected for his work in pediatric cardiovascular surgery. Dr. d'Udekem obtained more than 7 million dollars in grant funding in the past five years as he created and became a recognized leader for the highly touted Fontan Registry. He was also named The Baier Family distinguished professor of cardiac surgery at Children’s National Hospital, which is a prestigious honor that will advance the field of pediatric cardiac surgery for kids with special hearts.

As well as providing excellent patient and family experience throughout a patient's course from outpatient visits to inpatient stay, to the operating room and back again. Dr. d'Udekem also serves as a professor at George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Karen Smith, M.D., M.Ed., is the medical director of Global Services at Children’s National Hospital and associate professor of pediatrics at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Smith is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hospital medicine. Her career began as an army nurse at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Her service as an officer in the U.S. Army earned her several awards including the Army Commendation and Meritorious Service Medals. This experience inspired her to attend medical school at The George Washington University School of Medicine. After graduation she completed her pediatric residency at Children’s National Hospital and was recruited to be one of the founding members of the hospital medicine division at Children’s National. She is a master teacher and obtained her Master’s in Education from The George Washington University. At graduation she was awarded the Nadler Leadership Award. Throughout her career she has held many leadership positions to include chief medical officer at The HSC Pediatric Center, chair of the District of Columbia Children with Special Healthcare Needs Advisory Board, medical director of School-Based Telehealth Programs, chief of Hospital Medicine and president of the medical staff at Children’s National Hospital. In honor of her contributions to hospital medicine she was awarded the 2020 Excellence Award in Clinical Leadership by the Society of Hospital Medicine.
Dr. Oommen K. George, is the Senior Professor at the Department of Cardiology - Christian Medical College hospital, Vellore, India. The institution is one of the largest in South East Asia that cater all age group of patients from Neonates to Geriatric covering all aspects of Cardiology including adult and paediatric interventions, peripheral interventions including complex EVAR procedures, Valve Therapy and Electrophysiology services.

Dr. George has participated in more than 50 publications in the field of cardiology. He is attentive to teaching under-graduates and post-graduate in the field as well as being a mentor to all of them. He is also involved in the research projects of many of these students.
Dr. Hesham Tawakol is an American Board Certified in both Pediatrics and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. He is currently a consultant neonatologist and the program director of the neonatal-perinatal fellowship program at Corniche Hospital, Abu Dhabi, UAE. Dr. Tawakol is the president of the American Broad Certified Doctors for Egypt (ABCDE), a not for profit organization that is helping in improving the clinical, academic and research areas in the Middle East. His main interest is respiratory, infection and Nutrition.
Dr. Talal Altamimi, from Saudi Arabia, completed his residency in Pediatrics, followed by a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine in Canada. He further specialized with a sub-fellowship in Neonatal Hemodynamics and Point of Care Ultrasound Application for Neonates. Currently, Dr. Altamimi works at the Women's Health Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City, National Guard, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He is the Program Lead for Neonatal Hemodynamics and Point of Care Ultrasound, as well as the Program Lead for Neonatal Simulation. His research focuses on chronic pulmonary hypertension and ultrasound-guided vascular access in extremely preterm infants.
Dr. Jubara is a consultant neonatologist and assistant professor of Pediatrics at King Saud bin Abdul-Aziz University for Health Sciences.
She is an active board member of the Saudi Neonatology Society and the Saudi Neonatal Fellowship Program. Dr. Jubara is an editor and author for the Journal of Clinical Neonatology.
Her expertise includes neonatal resuscitation, outcomes of very low birth weight infants, research, and medical education.
Dr. Mohammed is a consultant neonatologist and the Head of Pediatrics at Khoula Hospital in Muscat. He completed his Fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Neonatal Transportation, and Medical Simulation at the University of Manitoba, Canada. His expertise includes quality improvement in NICU, infection control in NICU, and neonatal hemodynamics.
Dr. Haider is a consultant neonatologist at the Maternity and Children Hospital in AlAhsa. He completed a Fellowship in Perinatal-Neonatal Medicine in Saudi Arabia. Dr. Haider is the Neonatology Service Line Leader in the Al Ahsa Health Cluster and serves as the Neonatology Regional Champion in the Ministry of Health, Saudi Arabia. He is also a member of the Saudi Neonatal Society (SNS). His professional interests include healthcare quality, patient safety, and risk management.
Dr. Abdulaziz has been a consultant neonatologist at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre. He completed his Neonatal Perinatal Medicine fellowship at McMaster University. He served as the Director of the Fellowship Training Program in Neonatal Perinatal Medicine and as Chairman of the NICU Educational Committee. Dr. Abdulaziz was also the Chairman of the Neonatal Scientific Committee in the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS). He is currently serving as the Head of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. His research focuses on neonatal respiratory support, infections, neurodevelopmental outcomes, and the effects of environmental exposures on preterm infants.
Asha Moudgil, M.D., completed training in pediatric nephrology and transplant immunology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, UCLA School of Medicine, Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Moudgil's main interest and focus is on the long-term care of children after renal transplantation and those with difficult nephrotic syndrome. Dr. Moudgil has specialized in several issues pertaining to children after receiving a transplant such as "identifying nutritional vitamin D deficiency and monitoring for bone health", monitoring for "cardiovascular health" and "monitoring for common viruses including Epstein Barr Virus that can cause a cancer in children after transplantation known as post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder".
Dr. Moudgil focuses on educational efforts for trainees at Children's National Hospital and for pediatric nephrologists and transplant professionals across the United States and India by participating in writing national guidelines, organizing educational conferences and as a visiting faculty for annual meetings of Indian Society of Pediatric Nephrology. She is an avid advocate of patients with kidney diseases. She is a member of the medical steering committee of National Kidney Foundation of National Capitol Area and regularly volunteers in kidney prevention screening programs and educational forums organized by the National Kidney Foundation. Dr. Moudgil is a member of several national committees including Pediatric Transplant Community of Practice, American Society of Transplantation; Co-chair, Donor Advocacy Group, Pediatric Transplant Community of Practice, American Society of Transplantation; Special Studies Committee of the North American Pediatric Renal Trials and Collaborative Studies; Member, Clinical Affairs Committee, American Society of Pediatric Nephrology. Dr. Moudgil has published 71 articles and several book chapters related to pediatric kidney disease and transplantation.
Dr Sophia Varadkar is a Consultant Paediatric Neurologist and Deputy Medical Director at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust, and Honorary Associate Professor at University College London Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, London, UK. She is also Co-Medical Director of the North Thames Genomic Medicine Service, UK.
Sophia completed her undergraduate degree at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland and her postgraduate medical training in Dublin and London. Her clinical work focuses on complex epilepsy, the Children’s Epilepsy Surgery Service, Vagus Nerve Stimulation Therapy and MR-guided Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy.
Her clinical research training and PhD were in GOSH UCL Institute of Child Health. Since then she has been site priniciple investigator and co-investigator on a number of clinical studies and is co-applicant on an NIHR Programme Grant: Transforming the mental health treatment of young people with epilepsy.
Currently Sophia sits on the NHS England Paediatric Neuroscience Clinical Reference Group and the NHS Genomics Ethics, Equity and Legal Advisory Group. She is Chair of the British Paediatric Neurology Association Paediatric Epilepsy Training Programme Steering Committee. Previously she has been a Council Member of the International League Against Epilepsy British Branch.
Professor Mehul Dattani is Professor of Paediatric Endocrinology based at the University College London (UCL) Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (ICH), and Head of Clinical Service in Endocrinology at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). He has an active clinical practice in paediatric and adolescent Endocrinology at GOSH and University College London Hospitals (UCLH). He is Head of the Genetics and Epigenetics in Health and Disease (GEHD) Section within the Genetics and Genomic Medicine Programme at ICH. He recently completed a three-year term as Chair of the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, and is current Chair of the Programme Organizing Committee and member of the Council of the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE). He has recently been elected President of the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology in 2020.
Professor Dattani has established a laboratory group investigating the molecular basis of hypothalamo-pituitary disease at UCL. He has identified novel genes implicated in hypothalamo-pituitary development in patients with congenital hypopituitarism, and more recently has worked on understanding the molecular basis of a paediatric brain tumour called adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma. His work has been recognised nationally and internationally with publications in a number of high impact journals and national and international awards for the work, including the Donald Paterson prize awarded by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the Henning Andersen prize awarded by ESPE. He sits on numerous advisory boards and editorial boards of journals. Professor Dattani’s research group is currently studying the genetic basis of growth disorders. He also has an interest in a number of rare endocrine disorders, usually due to disordered development of endocrine organs.
I am a Consultant in Paediatric Palliative Medicine (PPM), Deputy Medical Director, at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) NHS Trust, London and Regional Conflict management Champion NHS England (London region).
I have worked as a specialist in Paediatric Palliative Medicine for over twenty years with clinical experience in tertiary paediatrics, children’s hospice, and home care. Following training within the Oxford deanery and as a Senior Fellow in Sydney, Australia, I have been driven to progress this area of patient care at every level, being one of the founding consultants and working to raise the profile nationally and internationally through various roles. Being instrumental in developing the Louis Dundas Centre for Paediatric Palliative Care, an integrated clinical and research model, hosted at the UCL Institute of Child Health, in partnership with benefactors and the GOSH Charity has been a highlight.
Between 2010 and 2013 (on special leave from GOSH) I worked with the Ministry of Health in Kuwait for three years, as a Consultant in NBK Cancer Centre and as the Medical Director Bayt Abdullah. I learnt a lot – enjoying the opportunity to understand Arabic culture and society as well as influencing policy and service development. I am delighted to be returning to Kuwait as part of the conference faculty.
Prof. Alfadhel is currently Deputy Executive Director of King Abdullah International Medical Research Centre (KAIMRC), Chairman of Genetics and Precision Medicine department at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Director of Medical Genomic lab at King Abdullah International Medical Research Centre (KAIMRC), and Professor of Pediatrics and Genetics at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS).

He was successful in contribution in discovery of 70 novel genes specifically for disorders involving the brain. In addition, he discovered a syndrome with dysmorphic features, intellectual disability, and speech delay, which named Alfadhel syndrome by the OMIM database, the official website for all genetic disorders.
Prof. Alfadhel’s foresight and passion for innovation, earned him an award for inventing a new application in the Apple store and Goggle play for the treatment of inborn errors of metabolism (IEM Drugs).
Dr. Sneha Deena Varkki is a professor in the pediatric department and a course director for the pediatric pulmonology fellowship at Christian Medical College. She has an interest in pediatric respiratory and sleep medicine. She is a member of European respiratory society and Indian chest society. She presented multiple lectures at national pediatric respiratory conferences. She organized various training workshops for health professionals across India on cystic fibrosis and other respiratory conditions. She has published multiple papers and completed international projects on cystic fibrosis. She is a reviewer of journals in the Indian Journal of Pediatrics. Dr. Debasis is a Pediatric Emergency Professor and the Head of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Unit, Department of Pediatrics, in Christian Medical College in India. He is also the Vice President of the Society of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) and the Program Director of the Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine in India. Dr Debasis has published more than 20 researches in pediatric emergency medicine and received many awards for both his researches and his contribution in improvement of pediatric emergency care. Dr. Uğur Işìk is a pediatric neurologist and Professor of Pediatrics at Acibadem University, School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics. She completed her pediatric residency at the Marmara University Hospital in Istanbul.
Dr. Işìk then moved to the USA where she completed her pediatric neurology residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After finishing her residency she moved to St. Louis for a fellowship in pediatric epilepsy with a special emphasis in epilepsy surgery. Dr. Işìk has several publications and presentations in a variety of topics within pediatric neurology with an emphasis on intractable epilepsy and epilepsy surgeries.
Dr. Alia Embaireeg is a specialized Neonatal Perinatal and Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography Specialist at Farwaniya Hospital in Kuwait. She earned her medical degree from Arabian Gulf University in the Kingdom of Bahrain and is board-certified in pediatrics by the Kuwaiti Board. She completed a fellowship training in neonatal neurology and neuro-critical care at the University of Toronto in 2016. She obtained her post-doctoral master degree in clinical research from Harvard Medical school.

Dr. Fatemah Bukhalaf is an Adolescent Medicine Specialist from Kuwait. Dr. Bukhalaf graduated from National University of Ireland, then completed Kuwaiti Board of Pediatrics. This includes the coordination of undergraduate and graduate medical training, monitoring the Continuous Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of senior medical staff.
Prof. Janahi oversees the extended fellowship programs including accredited residency programs from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education – International (ACGMEI), a body directly aligned with ACGME, which is responsible for accrediting the majority of graduate medical training programs for physicians in the United States.
Prof. Janahi’s remit also focuses on cultivating interdisciplinary programs, an effective and efficient way of medical and health practice, as part of Sidra Medicine’s joint accreditation with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), a prestigious accreditation body from the US, designed for physicians, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals.
Prof. Janahi’s area of clinical expertise includes interventional pulmonology, chronic lung diseases with genetic basis and rare lung diseases in children. His research interest includes the relationship between asthma and obesity in children, primary ciliary dyskinesia, Cystic Fibrosis and genetic basis of lung diseases and non-invasive monitoring of airway inflammation. He is the recipient of more than 4.5 million US $ in grants.
Dr. Janahi joined Sidra Medicine from Hamad Medical Corporation, where he was a senior consultant pediatric pulmonologist and the division chief; he established the pediatric pulmonology division at HMC in 2001. He was also acting as the director of the pediatric emergency center from 2001 till 2008. In addition, he was the Executive Director of Research for Hamad Medical Corporation from 2013-2018.
In addition to his current responsibilities at Sidra Medicine, Prof. Janahi is a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Weill-Cornell Medicine in Qatar and the Associate Dean for Academic Medicine at Sidra.
He is the current chair of the National Appeal Committee at the Ministry of Public Health and the former chairman of the National Permanent Licensing Committee.
He is the founder and president of Gulf Society for Pediatric Respirology and a founding member of the Arab Pediatric Pulmonology Association (APPA). In addition, he is a founding member and a member of the advisory board of Middle East Cystic Fibrosis Association (MECFA). He continues to serve as a country representative and a member of the International Advisory Board of the International Congress of Pediatric Pulmonology since 2001. He is a founding member of Qatar Medical Society and Qatar Thoracic Society.
He is an examiner for many certifying boards and qualifying examinations including the Arab Board and the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health of the United Kingdom.

Dr Ali is a developmental pediatric specialist with a background in child health and development. After graduating from Kuwait University’s Faculty of Medicine, he completed a pediatrics residency with the Kuwait Board, followed by a fellowship in developmental pediatrics at McMaster University.
